Victoria County commissioners to discuss mental health task force

Victoria Advocate - 11/19/2018

Nov. 18--Victoria County commissioners will discuss Monday the mental health task force serving the Crossroads that is set to triple in size since it was first formed a year ago.

Commissioners will review an agreement between the county and the Gulf Bend Center, which provides mental health treatment for seven counties in the Crossroads, including Victoria County. The agreement delegates five deputies from the Victoria County Sheriff's Office to work on the mental health task force.

The task force began last year in an effort to provide badly needed mental health support in the area and to try to divert people who need treatment away from local jails, where they frequently end up. In the first year of the task force, there were just two officers total: one from the Victoria Police Department and one from the Victoria County Sheriff's Office.

Now, thanks to more funding from the state, the number of sheriff's deputies participating in the task force will increase from one to five. The sheriff's office is still looking to hire deputies for the positions.

Also Monday, commissioners will discuss the Nov. 6 midterm elections and receive the official results from the county's elections office now that the results have been canvassed.
