Meyer will perform 10th veterans charity golf marathon

Lake Country Reporter - 6/29/2017

Town of Merton resident Carl Meyer has spent his last nine Fourth of Julys perfectly combining two sentiments of the season: playing golf and supporting United States veterans. This year will mark a decade of his pursuit.

On July 4, Meyer will golf at least 100 holes for the 10th year in a row to raise money for Hire Heroes USA, a nonprofit group that helps veterans and military spouses succeed in the civilian workforce.

Meyer has golfed 1,161 holes over the past decade for the cause, and this year his goal is to reach the cumulative benchmark of $1 million.

Each year, Meyer is joined by Marine Corps veteran and Wisconsinite John Matter, a former sniper and recipient of three Purple Hearts, for a couple hours on the course.

The event will take place at Chenequa Country Club and will continue throughout the day. Meyer begins golfing at 4 a.m. and continues until sundown.

Last year, Meyer broke his own record by completing 162 holes and raised $80,000, bringing his nine-year total to $540,000. He has already raised more than $100,000 in contributions and pledges this year.
