Jewish War Vet post honors Stoughton High student

Holbrook Sun - 3/3/2018

Stoughton High School senior Alexandra Soto was honored by the Massachusetts Department of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States on Feb. 11 at its 64th annual "Classmates Today Neighbors Tomorrow" Brotherhood Breakfast at Lombardo's in Randolph.

Sponsored by Sharon Post 735, Soto was accompanied by Stoughton High School Principal Juliette Miller, her mother, Stacey Soto, and Post 735 commander, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Weitzenkorn, USAF, of Stoughton.

Soto was nominated by her school advisors for her academic and extra-curricular achievements throughout her high school years. A total of 56 high school seniors from throughout the Commonwealth were participants in this year's program. Through the generosity of the Ninety-Nine Restaurant "Dining for a Cause" program and its Foxboro location, Sharon Post 735 was able to raise funds enabling the post to sponsor a student from 12 schools.

The Jewish War Veterans of the United States is the oldest veterans' organization in the country, predating the American Legion, the VFW and others. It was organized on March 15, 1896, a generation after the Civil War. The JWV was formed because of negative views on Jewish patriotism in general and on Jewish service in the military in particular.
